Creatures of the Month
Sun Dragon Studio’s collection celebrating a whimsy, wild, creature each month with it’s own piece.
July: The Alligator
Ancient, resilient, and surprisingly important, the American alligator is one of North America's greatest conservation success stories. These remarkable reptiles have existed for millions of years, surviving dramatic changes to the world around them while continuing to play a vital role in wetland ecosystems.
Alligators are considered a "keystone species" because the ponds and channels they create—known as alligator holes—provide essential habitat for fish, turtles, birds, and countless other animals, especially during dry seasons. In a way, alligators help shape and sustain the wetlands they call home.
By the 1960s, American alligators were nearly driven to extinction due to habitat loss and overhunting. Thanks to strong conservation efforts and legal protections, their populations rebounded so successfully that they were removed from the endangered species list in 1987. Today, they stand as a powerful reminder that conservation works when people come together to protect wildlife and wild places.
June: The Manta Ray
Graceful, intelligent, and awe-inspiring, manta rays are among the ocean's most remarkable creatures. With wingspans that can stretch over 20 feet, these gentle giants seem to soar through the water as if they were flying beneath the waves.
Despite their size, manta rays feed on some of the smallest organisms in the sea, filtering tiny plankton from the water. They are highly intelligent animals with the largest brain-to-body ratio of any fish, and scientists have observed behaviors that suggest curiosity, learning, and even self-recognition.
Manta rays reproduce very slowly, often giving birth to just one pup every few years. This makes healthy populations especially important and means that conservation efforts can have a huge impact on their long-term survival. Protected marine areas, sustainable tourism, and research programs around the world are helping these magnificent animals thrive.
